Dear Friends and Neighbors,
The May showers have returned and, as is typical this time of year, they make seeing the night sky difficult. I had to cancel the April Open House after it was overcast all day only to watch it clear later that night. Currently, rain is forecast for Saturday, but things could change. If it is clear, the highlight of the evening will be Jupiter. Jupiter just passed “opposition,” the point in our orbit where Jupiter is opposite the sun. It rises as the sun sets. This is the best time to see it through a telescope, because it’s at its closest to us. If we’re open, I plan to do a short lecture on Jupiter at 8:00 PM. Ideally, we’ll be open 8:00-10:00 PM weather permitting. As always, these events are free and open to the public.
Next month I plan to do some solar observing. We’ll do our open house earlier in the day and look at the sun (through a filter, of course)!
Hope you can make it.
